This is important to the pun. hi is fire, rei is spirit/ghost, and no is denoting possesion (the kanji that make up her last name mean lit. fire field [the kanji for rei spirit/ghost is not used, her name is spelled in katakana instead]). Therefore, Hino Rei sounds like hi no rei, which means fire spirit/ghost. Spirits and ghosts are supposed to be comprised of fire, therefore the phrase hi no rei has the same meaning as the word hi no tama, meaning soul (most literally, ball of fire). Likewise hi no tama shares its meaning with reikon, soul. This works because Rei is a priestess and she gains her abilities and foresight by seeking fire. Let's not forget her first attack Fire Soul.
