DiGi Charat was originally an illustration by Koge-Donbo for a company named BROCCOLI -who make computer and trading card games as well as anime and other goods. DiGi Charat was the mascot for their chain of stores. What became the names of the characters DiGi Charat and Gema, is actually an abbreviation of 'Digital Character' and 'Gamers'. Eventually DiGi Charat was given it's own short cartoon series in 1999. Since then the anime has branched off into several half-hour specials and a sequel series.

Koge-Donbo participates in the 'DiGi Charat Koshiki Comic Anthology'. There is also another DiGi Charat manga series out called 'Dejiko Adventure' by Kiriga Yuki.
