#2:
Kousagi/Chibiusa Eldest Daughter Problem

[ 01.20.02: note at end of essay added!]

First of all, the Parallelsailormoon chapter is a kakioroshi manga (the words kakioroshi manga appear on the silver paper ad around the book cover indicating that there is an extra chapter in the artbook), this basically means that Takeuchi-san wrote it on the spur of the moment "just because." This means that it does not necessarily follow the "rules", as it were, that she set while creating the 1 ~ 18 manga of the Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon series. Consequently, this mini-essay is based on what I have read from both the Parallelsailormoon chapter and from the 1 ~ 18 manga.

As stated in the chapter Parallelsailormoon from the Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon Setteiryoushuu, Kousagi is in the 3rd grade July of the year 1999, also her birthday is probably June 30th (like her mother and sister) therefore she is 8 years old at this point. Likewise, Mako, Ami, Rei, and Mina (the senshi's children) are also in the 3rd grade and either 7 or 8 years old. This fact shows that each of the children in the 3rd grade were born in the normal timeline and that their ages are correct for their place in time. They are NOT from the future.

Before I begin, please take a look at the timeline below:

End of 20th & Start of 21st Century

Usagi is 22 years old when Chibiusa is born

21st ~ 30th Century...
900 years Passes Until the 30th Century Starts...

After Chibiusa becomes 900 years-old
she travels back through time to the 20th Century.

This would make Chibiusa aprox. 900+ years-old
by the time Kousagi is 8, but ONLY because she
has traveled back in time. Officially, Chibiusa is born
AFTER Kousagi (making Chibiusa YOUNGER than Kousagi).

Chibiusa, as we know from the manga series, has traveled to the past, and, therefore, her place in time should be accounted for when calculating ages. Chibiusa is in 3rd year middle school June of 1999, and is then 900+ (not over 910) years old; we know this from the series manga. We also know that Chibiusa is 900 years old in some year of the 30th century (2901 ~ 3000) therefore she could not have been born before the year 2001. If we take into account all the information given in the manga about Chibiusa's age, we find that she must have been born somewhere between the years 2001 and 2099. This is backed up by the fact that both Kousagi and Chibiusa are existent in 1999. In other words, if the Chibiusa in Parallelsailormoon is not the Chibiusa that traveled back in time, then there would be no Chibiusa present (until her birth in 2001 or later). The absence of a younger Chibiusa and the presence of the 900+ year-old Chibiusa in the chapter proves this Chibiusa MUST be the one from the future. This, likewise, proves that when viewing the normal timeline with each daughter in their actual time, Kousagi is older than Chibiusa, and thus Kousagi is the first daughter.

We know from the series manga that Usagi is only supposed to have had one daughter and one daughter only. In Parallelsailormoon, the introduction box for Usagi states "mother of two."; One theory pertaining to this could be that when Usagi chose to awaken rather than live on as a senshi in manga 18, she was then free of all previous obligations and is now able to have multiple children.

When I first wrote this mini-essay I didn't realize I had worded myself wrong, now that I have rewritten it you can understand it better. I apologize if it is still rather confusing. This is now all correctly worded. Reading it a few times might help you get a better grasp of all the information, I highly suggest multiple readings of this essay. You can also use my timeline to figure this all out on your own, my wording may not suit you as well as your own research may. This essay is to help guide you along the path of logic I used to find these answers.

note added 01.20.02: Someone emailed me pointing out that in the chapter 'Parallelsailormoon' the intro boxes indicate Chibiusa as being 'eldest daughter' and Kousagi as 'youngest daughter' and was fairly rude in saying that this goes against everything I have written here. Well, it doesn't, and I have a very logical explanation as to why. First think about if you were to meet the Tsukino family in real life, if you did, wouldn't you be puzzled as to why the older daughter is being referred to as 'youngest daughter' when she has a sister who is far younger in age? Yes, you would. In order to reduce confusion to readers and the public (if this were real life) they call each daughter by obvious titles. If you take Chibiusa back to her original time (she is in the past, REMEMBER!) you will find a Kousagi there and she would be older than Chibiusa based on birth years. I hope this clears that up once and for all. AND, as I've said so many many times before, no one can make any solid conclusions about the series sans direct comment from the author herself.

I've been working on translating this essay into Japanese for a time when I might be able to send this to someone -Takeuchi Naoko, namely- who might be able to provide an official answer.
